Plantar Fasciitis and Driving

Plantar fasciitis is an extremely common type of heel pain that can develop in an individual when the plantar fascia, a band of tissue in the arch of the foot, becomes inflamed. Many different physical activities can cause plantar fasciitis. One of these overlooked causes can be driving repeatedly. Someone who is constantly driving may be increasing their susceptibility to plantar fasciitis in their right foot because this foot is needed to constantly press on and off of the gas and brake pedals. This repeated flexing of the foot is known as plantar flexion, and may exacerbate your plantar fasciitis. If you are an excessive driver, there are steps that you might consider taking to mitigate your foot condition. For example, you might be intentional about taking several breaks during car rides so that you may fully stretch your feet and legs. Contact a podiatrist today for more information.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact one of our podiatrists  from Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

Gout and the Possible Damage It Can Do

The foot condition known as gout can cause permanent damage to the tendons and joints if prompt medical attention is not sought. It is considered to be a chronic disease, in addition to being a form of arthritis. The big toe is often affected and can be painful and uncomfortable. Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid in the bloodstream and can form crystals that lodge in the joints of the big toe. This condition can develop due to genetics or from eating foods that have high levels of purines. These can include shellfish, red meat, alcohol, and drinks that are made with large amounts of sugar. Some patients have said they experience pain that is so intense it can be impossible to walk up the steps. Gout attacks may be reduced by implementing healthy lifestyle habits into daily living routines. These can consist of losing weight if applicable, exercising regularly, and drinking plenty of water. If you are afflicted with gout, it is strongly advised that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Flat Feet May Affect Adults

Flat feet are common in babies and may extend through adulthood. In most cases, the arch fully develops during the teenage years and is visible while standing up. Adults who have flat feet may have inherited this condition or it may occur due to a foot injury. Flat feet may be uncomfortable for many patients and relief may be found when shoes that are worn have extra cushioning in the arch area. The arch provides support in addition to evenly distributing body weight to the legs and hips. There may be medical conditions that can contribute to getting flat feet. These include arthritis, cerebral palsy, and muscular dystrophy. Tendonitis, bunions, and plantar fasciitis may also develop from having flat feet and relief may be found when custom-made orthotics are worn. If you have flat feet, please consult a podiatrist who can determine the best course of treatment, which may include practicing specific foot-strengthening exercises.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Rare Diabetes Foot Complications

Charcot foot used to be a rare diabetes complication. It was said to affect less than 1% of people with diabetes. Now experts say it is becoming more common, and there is worry that patients and their care providers do not know about this diabetic complication or its warning signs. Charcot foot is a sudden softening of the foot’s bones, caused by neuropathy or nerve damage from diabetes. It can lead to a host of serious problems, such as joint loss, fractures, and amputation. As the condition worsens, the bottom of the foot can become convex and bulge out. Since many diabetics do not feel pain in their lower extremities, they continue walking on the foot, which can cause further problems. This disorder cannot be reversed, but its dangerous effects can be halted if dealt with early. Symptoms appear suddenly and include warm, red skin, swelling, and pain. Unfortunately, these symptoms can also be a sign of deep vein thrombosis or an infection. If you are diabetic, it is important to include a podiatrist as part of your medical care team. They are educated in foot disorders that other doctors may not be aware of or are trained to treat.

Diabetic foot care is important in preventing foot ailments such as ulcers. If you are suffering from diabetes or have any other concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.
